Information About Cypress Oil

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is one of those essential oils that doesn’t get much focus. It doesn’t have a very strong smell like lavender, and it is not particularly glamourous, like rose, jasmine, or sandalwood.  However, it does have a long history of use by several different cultures including the Tibetians and the Chinese,  and this is for a few good reasons. Cypress is a styptic, meaning it acts like an astringent and reduces or eliminates bleeding and/or sweating.  It is also a vasoconstrictor, which means that it temporarily causes blood vessels to shrink in size.  Why is this important?  This is wonderful for anyone who is trying to treat acne, varicose veins, make shaving preparations, or make natural deodorants.

Cypress essential oil is distilled from the needles and twigs of the cypress tree.  The cypress tree grows in parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa.  There are many different species of cypress, but this article only focuses on Cupressus sempervirens.  The oil of Cupressus sempervirens is considered to have the highest quality oil of all the cypress trees.
